Anytime students are designing and building tiny houses I’m happy because this means our future generations are exploring ways of making housing more affordable, smarter, and better for the environment.

That’s what students at Ohio State University did with the creation of the POD Home. I encourage you to watch the video below to learn more.

Video Tour

It took students three years to design and build this Pod House where it now stands at the Center of Science and Industry.

Another cool fact about the house is that it’s designed with SIPs (Structurally Insulated Panels). This provides a strong shell with the best insulation possible.

The roof collects power from the sun using solar panels and it even collects, cleans and reuses grey water. The POD Home has also been apart of the education process at the OSU Solar Decathlon.

  1. Wow. Just WOW! So many positive things to say!

    1) The sheer volume of FEMALES in this project is fantastic, inspiring and encouraging. I was the ONLY female in my architecture classes. When we went as a group to visit places, people thought I was a girlfriend or wife of one of the students. Boo! Hiss!

    2) Ah, to be 18 again! I design traditional add-ons and garden structures but if I were 18 and had my entire life in front of me, I’d want to go to Ohio State and be part of this project.

    3) Fabulous that they have it at COSI, open to the general public to inspire and debunk myths about “fringe elements” only being associated with tiny homes.

    4) LOVE the Lime Green colour!!!! And the design…NOT a slave to absolute traditional tiny house construction but an homage to the archetype. It rather looks like a child’s drawing of a house, minus the curly smoke from a chimney that is always drawn into the picture.

    5) Try as I might, I couldn’t find ANY floor plan for the entire unit, even by visiting the COSI site. Oh well, you can’t get every wish fulfilled.

Thanks, Alex, for always supplying your fans with inspiring and interesting things to think and talk about. <3

I was able to find the floor plan in the video. It goes by very fast but starts around the 1:00 minute mark. I flashes other drawings that also give a breakdown of how the house is laid-out.

I agree with your thoughts and I too wish I could do this. All I can say is .. we can do what we can now. 🙂
