Hello my name is Don and I live in the Okanagan Valley of BC Canada. I was in the market for a tiny off grid home. In preparation for moving from 2300 sq ft to 600 sq ft I moved into the 300 sq ft students suite in the basement of my home. Unfortunately the deal on the off grid cabin fell through and now I will have to wait until next spring to give it another try. What I found was living in 300 sq ft is very doable. It is just me and my Border Collie. My girlfriend has a home in another town so she is not here full time. A small living room with TV and desk, a full size bedroom with a queen bed, and a kitchen/laundry room. The kitchen does not have a stove but a induction hot plate, microwave and small fridge. I have my own entrance and BBQ. No fridge space means shopping more often. It has definitely helped me eat better! Because of the small space, it has driven me outside more often. Both myself and the dog are better for it! Now the amazing thing. I have now rented the top level of my house for $1000.00 per month and the test is over as I am now living in my new small space full time. This is kind of upside down as most I know live in the larger portion of the house and rent the suite, Not Me! By the time I find my dream cabin I will be a pro at living in a small space. Not to mention a little bit richer in many way.

  1. Back in 2005 I moved from a 2200 Sq.Ft. home into a 100 sq. ft. room. JUST a room, not even a closet. I adapted and quickly discovered I need 200 sq.ft. to live comfortably. I love my computers and audio/visual toys and they cramp my style in my room. I put my bed four feet in the air and stored necessities under the bed and use a cook-plate, toaster oven and micro wave with a fan in the window for exhaust. No fried foods this way and forget fish, that’s what restaurants are for! I hit the store, very day, for food because there is no fridge. 200 sq.ft. here I come! That will accommodate a bathroom, kitchen and living-room. Then I won’t have to use the shower at the gym or at work, everyday darn day! Why do I live this way? Simple, $400 a month for rent and I pay phone and water only. That’s why!
